WKO Professional K-1 Rules 

Professional Status

  • Fighters may only compete as a Professional from 18 years of age.

  • Once had 3 professional bouts a fighter cannot return to Amateur status.

 

Bout Duration

 

Non-Title Bout

  • 3 × 3 minute rounds

  • 1 minute rest between rounds

 

Regional / Area Title

  • 3 × 3 minute rounds

  • 1 minute rest between rounds

 

National, International, Continental & World Titles

  • 5 × 3 minute rounds

  • 1 minute rest between rounds

 

WKO may also sanction Professional contests promoted by approved organisations, including the Super Fight Series (SFS), provided all WKO rules and requirements are followed.

 

Ways to Win

A contest may end by:

  • Knockout (KO)

  • Technical Knockout (TKO)

  • Judges' Decision

  • Disqualification (DQ)

  • Draw

  • No Contest

The Referee and Ringside Doctor both have the authority to stop the contest at any time for safety reasons.

 

Scoring

  • Three judges score every round using the 10 Point Must System.

  • The winner of each round receives 10 points.

  • The loser receives 9 points or fewer.

  • Even rounds are scored 10-10.

 

Draws

If a winner is required and the scores are tied:

  • One or two extra 3-minute rounds will be contested.

  • Only the extra rounds are scored.

  • If still level after the extra round(s), the judges will award victory to the fighter who showed the better overall performance.

 

A contest may only officially end in a draw where competition rules permit, or if circumstances such as simultaneous knockdowns or an accidental injury prevent a winner being determined.

 

Knockdown Rules

  • Three Knockdown Rule: Three knockdowns in one round results in a TKO.

  • Mandatory Eight Count: Every knockdown receives at least an eight count.

  • Standing Eight Count: The referee may issue a standing eight count if a fighter is unable to defend themselves intelligently.

  • A fighter may only be saved by the bell in the final round.

Tournament Rules, For single-elimination tournaments:

  • All contests are 3 × 3 minute rounds.

  • The Two Knockdown Rule applies in all tournament bouts except the final.

  • Reserve bouts may be held to provide replacement fighters where necessary.

 

Required Equipment

 

Mandatory

  • Gumshield

  • Approved boxing gloves

  • Groin protector (male)

 

Optional

  • Breast protector (female)

  • Ankle supports

 

Gloves

  • 8oz gloves may be used for fighters under 70kg, with prior agreement by both teams and WKO approval.

  • 10oz gloves are standard for all other contests.

  • All gloves must be inspected and approved before each bout.

 

Hand Wraps

Only traditional cotton or bandage wraps secured with zinc oxide tape are permitted.

  • Tape must not cover the knuckles.

  • Gaffa tape or similar materials are prohibited.

 

Clothing

  • Thai shorts or MMA-style shorts are permitted.

 

Legal Techniques

 

Punches

  • Jab

  • Cross

  • Hook

  • Uppercut

 

Kicks

  • Front Kick

  • Low Kick

  • Body Kick

  • High Kick

  • Side Kick

  • Back Kick

  • Jumping Kick

  • Inside Leg Kick

 

Knees

  • Knees to the body are permitted.

  • Knees to the head are permitted.

  • Flying knees are permitted.

 

Spinning Techniques

  • Spinning back kicks are permitted.

  • Spinning backfists are permitted only when struck with the authorised part of the glove. Contact with the elbow or forearm is a foul.

 

Back Spinning Strike

 

A spinning backfist is only legal when, when nehotiated and agreed by both opponents to be featured in the bout. Then when struck with the authorised striking surface.

If there is uncertainty, the referee may consult the Rules Director using video replay. Illegal contact with the elbow, forearm or other unauthorised part of the arm may result in penalties or disqualification.

 

Fouls

The following are prohibited:

  • Headbutts

  • Elbow strikes

  • Groin attacks

  • Throws, sweeps or submissions

  • Eye attacks

  • Biting

  • Choking or throat strikes

  • Striking a grounded opponent

  • Striking after "Break" or "Stop"

  • Holding the ropes

  • Offensive or abusive language

  • Punching the back of the head

  • Deliberately forcing an opponent from the ring

  • Leaving the ring without permission

  • Attacking an opponent who has clearly turned away

  • Illegal spinning strikes using the elbow or forearm

 

Holding & Clinching

Holding and clinching are only permitted when immediately followed by an authorised attack.

 

The referee will penalise:

  • Passive clinching

  • Holding to avoid fighting

  • Excessive holding after attacking

  • Holding without striking

  • Deliberately falling to avoid engagement

 

Catch Srike & Release:

 

When holding/Cathcing a kicking leg, only one immediate counter attack (kick or punch) is permitted before releasing.

 

K1 Clinch

When controlling the opponent's neck with one hand only, then only one knee strike is permitted before releasing or the referee calling "Break."

 

Passive Fighting

 

Fighters may be penalised for:

  • Constantly retreating

  • Failing to engage

  • Waiting only to counter attack

  • Avoiding exchanges without attempting to score

 

Penalties

 

The referee may issue:

  1. Caution

  2. Warning

  3. Point Deduction

  4. Disqualification

 

Progressive penalties normally apply:

  • 2 Cautions = 1 Warning

  • 2 Warnings = 1 Point Deduction

  • 3 Point Deductions in one bout may result in Disqualification.

 

For serious or deliberate fouls, the referee may immediately award a warning, deduct points, or disqualify the offender without following the normal progression.

WKO Semi-Professional Rules

 

The WKO Semi-Professional Rules are identical to the WKO Professional Rules, providing fighters with the same rules, scoring system, permitted techniques and bout format to prepare them for full professional competition.

The only exceptions are:

  • No purse, fight fees or commission may be paid to either competitor.

  • Fighters must wear approved shin guards and instep (foot) protection throughout the contest.

 

Round Durations:

  • 3 × 1.5 minute rounds

  • 45 Seconds rest between rounds

  • (round times can be negotiated)

 

Semi-Professional competition is designed to bridge the gap between amateur and professional competition, allowing athletes to gain experience under full professional rules while maintaining additional safety through the use of protective equipment.

 

It provides an ideal pathway for fighters preparing to progress into the professional ranks.
